Engine Management Upgrade Guide.

Need more power or economy from your engine?
Want to make tuning changes to your air, fuel mixtures or Ignition timing without spending a fortune?
There are many reasons you may want to do this, either installing a new cam, larger injectors or just improving the power and efficiency on a stock engine. If this appeals to you and you have an EFI vehicle with a voltage type Air-flow meter, Hot wire, Vane or MAP sensor, the following steps and products ahead will suit your needs and work just as effectively.

This demonstration will show step by step how to install the Punk Performance range of engine management products. This demonstration is on a VRX 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer.
The items shown are extremely cost effective, highly versatile and superior in control.
These products are not one time plug-ins or one chip fits all type of gimmicks, these are true interceptor chips, that feed adjustments back to the ECU allowing you to program the timing and fuel mixtures wherever you need throughout the vehicles rev range.

Features of the DFAS and Ignition System

> Eliminate Boost Cuts
> Tune and Modify your Air-Fuel Ratios
> Perfect for up sizing your Air-Flow Meter or Injectors, Cam, etc
> Allows Power for and Economy Tuning

> Timing retard & advance over a wide range
> Suitable for single coil systems
> Dwell adjustment
> Single or dual mapping ranges
> Two de-bounce settings
> Max & min RPM adjustment (rev limiter)
> Suits 1 to 12 cylinder four stroke engines and 1 to 6 cylinder two stroke engines
> Optional knock sensing & correction

Prior to chipping your vehicle it is a good idea to make sure everything is in order, have your vehicle serviced, making make sure there are no fault codes in the ecu and that all your ignition leads, spark plugs etc are in good working condition.

If you are chipping a stock vehicle it is a good idea to have your car put on a dyno prior, so you can get a good idea of the performance you will gain from these products. The dyno operator can show you what your current fuel mixtures and timing setting are set at, they will then know the approximate limits of your engine and what they could gain with the ability to adjust.

This is the first run on the Stock VRX Lancer

The first runs shows us that the stock VRX had no ECU error codes and is running extremely well and close to the factory specifications, the best of three runs was 71.7HP.

If you have this model lancer and want better economy you can forget it, the stock mixtures and timing show this vehicle comes from the factory tuned for maximum economy, there is very little room for improvement on that side of tuning.

The dyno run shows that there is plenty of room for adjustment on the power side of tuning, with the Lancer running very little ignition spark down low and can be advanced up to 10 degrees at parts throughout the rev range, we can also see on the dyno chart below that the fuel mixtures are quite lean between 2700 and 3700 rpms. It also shows the engine to running very lean when nearing peak power.

special thanks to www.bossmuscle.com.au for the dyno work

Once this is complete you are right to go ahead with the install, your vehicle will stay running stock standard until you make programming changes.

Next week we will cover the install. Stay Tuned
